The current style consensus this summer states that dresses are the preferred attire for summer dating (says both men and women!) In fact, the first 10 of Cosmo’s 20 Summer date outfits suggestions are dresses.  Not stuffy work inspired, but casual, cool, loose, flowy and perfect for showing off your tan dresses.

A dress expresses femininity in such a lovely way.  Usually not showing too much skin, usually hiding a few lumps and bumps along the way, summer dresses make a GREAT first impression. A dress says to him that you tried – even the most casual dress styles.  (In the same way that a man wearing a collar shirt conveys “trying” to a woman.  See my article for men about what women want them to wear on a date)

Dresses are airy, are much cooler than jeans in the summer, and offer a  nicer date-look than shorts.

So what dresses should you buy?  I’m not talking white-linen-table-cloth-dinner-dresses.  Nor would I suggest you wear a dress if your date has planned a significant outdoor activity like a hike.  Or probably even a sit on the grass picnic – only Lady Mary from Downton Abbey can pull that off (and likely Anna was in the wings to provide assistance).  These dresses are perfect for:

  • coffee and croissant dates
  • lunch on the dock dates
  • outdoor art festival dates
  • stroll in the park dates
  • walk up the avenue dates

If you’ve worn a dress on a recent date, let me know in the comments below whether it worked or not for you?

So next step, where to shop?

I’ve pulled a few pretty options that are appropriate for several body types and set the mood just right!

Jessica London is a plus-size resource I’ve often used.  Here is a dress I like, and it comes in 4 colors. I wasn’t expecting to like the white but with the pop of color bag I do!  And the sweater is perfect if you prefer arm coverage.  Maxi dresses are also great as they provide one long lean look.

If you are on the younger side and smaller side, why not do a visual run through H&M for one of your seasonal purchases.  I will say I had to scroll down through 4 pages to find this softly patterned floral dress.  But it was worth it – I like it. And the hat is a nice touch.

This Ann Taylor madras is a great dress!  If you are large chested, this may make you feel too “busty” (and as a halter top you will need the correct bra) but the pattern is fun, would look good on a variety of skin tones and is easy to accessorize.

Last but not least, don’t forget your ID when you wear this delightful crepe floral print by Ralph Lauren because the silhouette will shave a decade off you!  What’s better than that?

Don’t forget accessories with your day-date summer dresses.  A light sweater, minimal jewelry, a straw hat and pretty flat sandals (fun toe nail polish?) will all add up to a wonderful summer date look.   Want the whole look put together?  That’s what I do!

PS.  I have summer bag that’s neutral and on the smaller size – you don’t want your big Louis’ NeverFull Tote to weigh down your look.  Try this Mini Straw Tote on sale at Lord and Taylor
